Latest figures by the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) are out and although there were 1521 fewer registrations than August 2018, there has been a massive surge in Battery Electric Cars.

Year on year figures dropped by 1.6%, but August is usually a quiet month in the motor trade due to the latest plates being released in September, but Zero Emission cars saw a massive increase of 377.5% to 3,147 units.

This has been fuelled by the long awaited arrival of the Tesla Model 3 in the UK, with customers trying desperately to get their RHD models registered, avoiding the usual wait until September for the new plate.

On the back of this Plugin Hybrids saw a decline with just 907 vehicles registered in the month of August. Petrol cars remain the strongest with a total of 59,019 vehicles registered.

Most Registered Cars in August 2019

  • Ford Fiesta — 3,978 Models registered
  • Volkswagen Golf — 3,439 Models registered
  • Tesla Model 3–2,082 Models registered
  • Ford Focus — 1,886 Models registered
  • Mercedes-Benz A Class — 1,880 Models registered

This is the first time an Electric Car has been in the top 10 cars and is a fantastic achievement for Tesla and their “in-reach” Model 3.
